Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of amassing wealth while the state’s development remains stagnant.
Speaking at a press conference in Jorhat, he highlighted state’s poor standing in the Human Development Index (HDI), ranked 31st in the country, juxtaposed against Sarma’s position as the 9th richest Chief Minister in India.

“While Assam struggles at the bottom of the HDI rankings, our Chief Minister has managed to secure the 9th spot among India’s wealthiest CMs. At this rate, he could break into the top five within a year,” Gogoi remarked.
The Congress MP also criticized the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), describing the current regime as “draconian” and burdensome for the poor and middle class. “Rising prices and unemployment are causing immense hardship to the people of Assam,” he said in a social media post, attributing these challenges to the “mismanagement” of the BJP-led NDA government.
Gogoi highlighted his party’s proposed solution—a simplified GST 2.0 system outlined in their Nyay Patra 2024. This revised framework, he claimed, would rectify the flaws in the current GST system and provide relief to the common people.
He further urged the public to demand accountability and called for prioritizing governance that addresses economic challenges over personal wealth accumulation.
